Asbestos-related compensation claims

Several conditions caused by occupational exposure to asbestos are well recognised and those affected who have been employed in a prescribed occupation can claim compensation. Stringent criteria must be fulfilled in order to establish the link between occupational exposure and the condition. Some asbestos related conditions are:

• pleural thickening – extensive thickening of the lung walls
• pleural plaques – areas of scar tissue on the outside surface of the lung
• asbestosis – scarring of the lung tissues leading to reduced lung function
• mesothelioma – tumour of the covering of the lung or the lining of the chest wall. Lung Cancer – cancer that forms in the tissue of the lungs

With regard to mesothelioma, you do not have to have occupational exposure to asbestos in order to qualify for compensation. The Diffuse Mesothelioma Scheme 2008 was specifically created to compensate those who have no occupational exposure to asbestos.
