Learning disabilities

People with learning disabilities may need a different approach and support to help them in their understanding of their or someone else’s illness. Often, people with learning disabilities find it easier to understand information if it is presented as pictures rather than written text.

CHANGE is leading national human rights organisation led by disabled people. CHANGE has worked in conjunction with Macmillan Cancer Support to produce the CHANGE cancer series  - a series of books in easy-read format with an accompanying guide for carers. The books are a free resource and cover the following areas:

  • Book 1: Symptoms, Screening and Staying Healthy
  • Book 2: Diagnosis and Treatment
  • Book 3: Palliative Care, End of Life Care and Bereavement

The books can be ordered free of charge from the Macmillan website.

The Palliative Care for People with Learning Disabilities Network also provides a list of resources designed for people with learning disabilities.

The British Institute of Learning Disabilities gives advice and support about communicating with children who have learning disabilities.
